• Kyle Canyon, Parsons School of Design '20

In his book, Kyle Canyon presents the dainty diva Cutie Egg, an androgynous anthropomorphic egg who guides you in contemplating life and death in a time of desperate self-actualization. Cutie Egg is a collection of two-panel comic strips illustrating the nonchalant vanity and cynicism of a feisty little egg going about its day and expressing its sense of existential ennui. The book is a simultaneously humorous and melancholic exploration of the creator’s own feelings of guilt and anxiety as he navigates identity politics and participates in social media self-representation. Readers can easily relate to the constant struggle to perfect “a “networked self.” Cutie Egg deals with this struggle by adopting an attitude of sassy defiance in the face of others’ expectations. We follow as Cutie theatrically confronts its inevitable fate: becoming either breakfast or a chicken that perpetuates the cycle of an egg’s undead dread.
