Layered Histories: Muralism as Latine Representation within Urban Landscapes

Since the 1960s, murals have served as a means of responding directly to the rising political and social turmoil faced by Latine people in cities across the United States.

Layered Histories: Muralism as Latine Representation within Urban Landscapes celebrates public artworks in urban communities through a set of three risograph-printed accordion-bound artist's books. This work is designed to honor art created in cities, highlighting the role played by these forms of spatial layering in changing the narrative of urban landscapes to represent the Latine communities that populate these spaces.

Inspired by the legacy of Los Tres Grandes, three great 20th-century Mexican muralists, this work consists of vivid images from Latine neighborhoods in New York City, Philadelphia, and San Diego. Through the inclusion of mural guides, information on local organizations, and interviews with residents, the work encourages readers to form connections with members of the featured communities. Each city is represented through a unique pairing of colors. The books showcase the murals that have played an essential part in preserving Latine history, stories, and identity in these cities.

Through cultural imagery, language, and color, these murals function as an essential way for Latine people to preserve their history and stories and as a means of resistance to the erasure and neglect faced by Latine communities throughout the nation.
