Global Studies (BA)

Innovative Curriculum

Global Studies students critically examine power structures and analyze pressing issues, introducing them to contexts and causal dynamics that help them develop innovative responses to current issues. Students learn to think across disciplines and scales, understand our own implication in how things came to be, and pursue innovative responses to seemingly intractable problems.

We continue to offer courses and co-curricular opportunities in global studies. Students who begin their studies in the Adult Bachelor's Program in fall 2026 or after can continue to explore this subject through:

• Topical courses in global studies, such as Global Economies, Decolonizing International Law, and Global Gender and Sexuality.
• The Global Studies minor.
• Programming and events hosted by institutes such as the Center for Global Mental Health and the Henry H. Arnhold Forum on Global Challenges.
• Fellowships and grants such as the Global Studies Research Award. One recent grant supported a student’s internship with the Mexican representative to the United Nations and helped fund her trip to CEDAW in Geneva. 
• Internships and independent work in the community. Students have recently interned at the Global Knowledge Initiative and African Services Committee. 
• Lang’s annual Dean’s Honor Symposium, in which students connect their interests and scholarship with experiences outside of the classroom and in context with one another. 

Career Paths

The program combines academic study with internships and other fieldwork opportunities in New York City and abroad. Graduates are prepared to pursue careers in the non-profit sector, public service, international organizations, global media, development, the arts, research organizations, education, government, and law, as well as graduate study in the social sciences, and more.

Interdisciplinary Excellence

The New School offers the BA in Global Studies as part of the university's suite of cross-college, interdisciplinary undergraduate programs, which includes Global Studies, Environmental Studies, and Urban Studies. These interdisciplinary programs are designed to prepare students for the new careers of the 21st century.
